Kaesang Pangarep: Regional Election Bid, Constitutional Court, and Requirements

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kaesang Pangarep's steps to run in the 2024 regional elections or Pilkada have been obstructed by a Constitutional Court decision. Constitutional Court Decision Number 70/PUU-XXII/2024 mandates that gubernatorial/deputy gubernatorial candidates must be at least 30 years old at the time of their candidacy determination by the General Elections Commission (KPU).
As the KPU's candidate nomination process is scheduled for September 22, 2024, and Kaesang is currently 29 years old, he does not meet the age requirement. The youngest son of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo will turn 30 in December 2024.
This means the Constitutional Court's decision has impeded Kaesang's efforts to run for regional office, despite being nominated by the NasDem Party as a deputy governor candidate for Central Java to accompany Ahmad Luthfi.
On Tuesday, August 20, NasDem Party Chairman Taufik Basari said that his side would conduct a thorough review and discussion regarding the Constitutional Court's decision and its implications for their candidate nomination process.
While confirming NasDem's nomination of the Luthfi-Kaesang pair for the Central Java Pilkada, Taufik noted that the nomination was made before the Constitutional Court decided on the age requirement. He also stated that NasDem continues to engage with other parties regarding their support for the Luthfi-Kaesang candidacy.
Kaesang is Completing Paper Requirements
The South Jakarta District Court has confirmed today, August 23, that Kaesang has obtained a certificate stating that he has never been convicted, a requirement for candidacy in the 2024 Central Java Regional Election.
“Kaesang has indeed acquired a certificate of non-conviction from the South Jakarta District Court, which is a prerequisite for candidacy as Deputy Governor of Central Java,” said South Jakarta District Court Public Relations Officer Djuyamto on Friday.
Djuyamto stated that the certificate was issued on August 20, 2024, in Kaesang's name. In addition to the certificate of non-conviction, the chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) also requested a certificate confirming that his voting rights have not been revoked and a certificate verifying that he has no outstanding debts, either as an individual or a legal entity.
The South Jakarta District Court stated that the issuance of these certificates was in accordance with their standard operating procedures for processing public requests.
