Former Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Corruption

11 July 2024 14:58 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaFormer agriculture minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo alias SYL was sentenced to 10 years in prison today, July 11, by the panel of judges at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court for extortion within the ministry.

He was also fined Rp300 million. If the fine remains unpaid, he will face an additional four months imprisonment. Additionally, SYL is required to pay compensation. Unpaid compensation will be recovered through the auction of confiscated assets.

“The defendant was found guilty of jointly committing continuous acts of corruption,” Chief Judge Rianto Adam Pontoh stated while delivering the verdict.

SYL was convicted of violating Article 12 (e) in conjunction with Article 18 of Law No. 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Corruption Crimes, along with Article 55 (1-1) of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 64 (1) of the Criminal Code.

SYL's sentence was lighter than the prosecution's request. Prosecutors sought a 12-year prison term with a Rp500 million fine, convertible to six months imprisonment if unpaid. They also requested compensation of Rp44.27 billion and US$30,000, minus any confiscated funds.

The charges against Syahrul Yasin Limpo stemmed from a corruption case involving extortion or receiving bribes totaling Rp44.5 billion between 2020 and 2023. The extorted funds were used for personal and family purposes.
