TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will face South Korea in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Asian Cup, which will be held at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar. The game is set to occur at 00:30 Jakarta time on April 26.
The coach of the Indonesian youth team, Shin Tae-yong, who is a South Korean national, declined to make any statement regarding the upcoming match.
On Monday, April 26, South Korea defeated Japan 1-0 in the final match of Group B to finish on nine points, while Japan finished on six points. South Korea will now face Indonesia, the runners-up in Group A.
Shin Tae-yong had previously quipped that South Korean coach Hwang Sun-hong would be under pressure if his team faces the Indonesian team. He made the remark before the onset of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup, as reported by Chosun.
However, since the meeting between the two teams will indeed take place, Shin Tae-yong was tight-lipped after watching Monday’s match between South Korea and Japan. “I will not make any comments. The interview will be held after the match,” he said.
Shin Tae-yong apparently evaded South Korea as an opponent for the Asian U-23 Cup. In the post-match press conference against Australia on Thursday, April 18, he claimed that he would rather face Japan than South Korea, and hoped to face South Korea in the final.
The 2024 Asian U-23 Cup marks Indonesia's debut tournament. Earlier, Indonesia lost 2-0 to Qatar in their first match but later defeated Australia 1-0 and Jordan 4-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
