TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has highlighted Indonesia’s readiness to lead water governance transformation through the 10th World Water Forum (WWF), scheduled for May 18–25 in Bali.

“Indonesia can lead the 10th World Water Forum to create key and concrete agreements to maintain the sustainability of water and the environment globally,” said Endra S. Atmawidjaja, an expert staff member of the PUPR Minister, on Saturday.

This is because the meeting will be attended by several heads of state and former leaders, he explained.

“Together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we are actively working to ensure the event is attended by as many world leaders as possible,” he added.

Indonesia's success in promoting water governance through local cultural approaches, exemplified by the UNESCO-recognized subak irrigation system in Bali and Lake Bratan's management, is expected to be a draw for world leaders.

The many good practices Indonesia has implemented are expected to be a strong attraction at the meeting, which will involve all water governance stakeholders, he said.

The main outcome of the 10th WWF, themed "Water for Shared Prosperity," will be a ministerial declaration along with concrete deliverables.

There are three things that Indonesia is targeting to be agreed upon at the meeting, namely the establishment of a center of excellence on water and climate resilience, mainstreaming integrated water resources management on small islands, and routine World Lake Day activities.

The forum will feature discussions on three processes, namely thematic, political, and regional.

The thematic process will cover six sub-themes: water security and prosperity; water for humans and nature; disaster risk reduction and management; governance, cooperation, and hydrodiplomacy; sustainable water finance; and knowledge and innovation.

The regional process will cover four regions: the Mediterranean, the Asia-Pacific, the Americas, and Africa.

Meanwhile, the political process will comprise meetings of heads of state, ministers, parliaments, local authorities, and basin authorities.
