TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - The Bekasi city government recorded that at least 50 percent of its residents have departed for their hometown as of D-3 of Eid al-Fitr 2024. “Perhaps it’s above 50 percent,” said Acting Mayor of Bekasi, Raden Gani Muhammad, on Sunday, April 7.
After checking bus terminals and train stations throughout the city, he concluded that the peak of Eid homecoming traffic in Bekasi occurred on Saturday, April 6. “We conducted a station check and noticed a significant decrease [in the number of passengers]. We also monitored the CCTV, which showed that the Cikampek toll road is relatively empty,” he added.
Nevertheless, Gani pointed out that the likelihood of traffic congestion remains high on the primary arterial road, Jalan Raya Kalimalang, towards Cikarang, which leads to the northern coastal region (Pantura). The city administration, in collaboration with the police, will remain vigilant in order to minimize traffic congestion.
Adj. Sr. Comr. Yugi Bayu Hendarto, Head of the Bekasi Metro Police Traffic Unit, said that the police enforced the 3:1 traffic light control system to anticipate congestion along the Eid homecoming route.
“We executed it manually. We give priority to the Eid homecoming route,” Yugi said, stressing that the traffic light control system was more effective in preventing traffic congestion than relying solely on regular traffic lights.
