TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Indonesia), together with venture capital firm East Ventures and World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, unveiled ECOVISEA, a tool designed to calculate and visualize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Southeast Asian businesses.
ECOVISEA, which stands for Emission Calculator & Visualization Southeast Asia, emerged from a collaboration rooted in the shared goal of achieving net zero emissions at the Indonesia Net Zero Summit 2022, a sideline event of B20 Indonesia.
With Indonesia ranking among the top 10 GHG emitters globally, contributing approximately 1.48 GtCO2e annually, businesses must track their emissions to streamline assessing and mitigating their environmental footprint. Due mainly to limited access to the necessary skills and knowledge for GHG accounting, many Indonesian businesses, ranging from large corporations to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and startups, have yet to assess their carbon footprints. Actionable solutions like Ecovisea aim to address the critical gap.
Shinta W. Kamdani, Vice Chairperson for Maritime Affairs, Investment, and Foreign Affairs of Kadin Indonesia, highlighted the platform's significance in supporting national companies' transition to Net Zero. “This initiative reflects our commitment through Kadin Net Zero Hub to assist national companies in transitioning towards becoming Net Zero Companies. ECOVISEA provides an essential tool for Indonesian companies to track and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. We are confident that ECOVISEA will play a pivotal role in enabling national companies to collectively achieve the government’s targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reaching Net Zero Emission by 2060,” she said.
East Ventures Partner Avina Sugiarto said that the collaborative effort behind ECOVISEA's development "simplifies the previously manual carbon calculation process while empowering businesses to visualize their GHG emission sources."
Meanwhile, WRI Indonesia said the tool's potential to democratize knowledge on accurate emissions accounting, is crucial for Indonesia's industrial decarbonization efforts. “It is critical to streamline the data input process to help companies overcome challenges in precisely estimating their emissions, which often arise from complex data presentation and complicated data entry procedures,” said Nirarta Samadhi, Country Director of WRI Indonesia.
ECOVISEA provides a user-friendly interface where companies can measure emissions across three scopes: direct emissions, indirect emissions from purchased energy, and all other indirect emissions within the company's value chain. The tool leverages globally standardized emission factor data from Climatiq, ensuring compliance with the GHG Protocol and ISO 14067.
