TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Nusa Tenggara or NTT's volcano Mount Ili Lewotolok in Lembata Region erupted on Thursday afternoon, February 1, 2024, at around 01:09 p.m. local time. The ash column was seen 500 meters above the mountain peak or 1,23 meters above sea level.

"The gray ash column with medium to thick intensity was observed moving northeast, with a maximum amplitude of 32 mm and a 115-second duration," said the Acting head of the Geological Board Muhammad Wafid in a statement today.

The mountain erupted less than an hour prior, at 12:41 p.m. local time. The white-grey ash column was observed at 400 meters high above the mountain peak with a maximum amplitude of 36 mm and a 56-second duration.

"The eruption was accompanied by a weak boom sound," Wafid said. The stratovolcano now holds the Level II Alert status. He urged people to avoid the 2-kilometer range from Mount Ili Lewotolok.

"Residents of Lamawolo, Lamatokan, and Jontona villages are urged to remain vigilant of lava and hot clouds coming for the eastern of Mount Ili Lewotolok's crater," he said.

In this past month, the Geological Board has erupted seven times.
