North Maluku's Mount Dukono Erupts, Ejecting Volcanic Ash 4,000 Meters High

3 January 2024 08:43 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMount Dukono in North Maluku erupted this morning, January 3, sending volcanic ash as high as approximately 4,000 meters into the air. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported the eruption.

“The eruption occurred at 06:52 WIT (East Indonesian Time),” the volcano’s observation post officer, Sarjan Roboke, said in a statement received in Jakarta, on Wednesday.

Sarjan said the thick white-gray column of ash was flying toward the southwest. He urged people near the volcano to not engage in any activities, including hiking or approaching the Malupang Warirang crater within a radius of three kilometers.

People are also advised to always have a face mask on hand to prevent the respiratory system from being affected by the volcanic ash.

In addition, sand miners are urged to refrain from doing mining activities along the Muye River in Mamuya Village, the Ruko River in Ruko Village, and the Mede River in Mede Village in order to avoid the possibility of rain lava flooding.

Mount Dukono is located in North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province, and stands at 1,087 meters above sea level.

PVMBG monitors the volcanic activity of Mount Dukono visually and instrumentally from observation posts located in Mamuya Village, Galela District, North Halmahera.
