Yet Another Earthquake Strikes Sumedang to Bandung

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake measuring a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale rocked Sumedang and its surroundings on Monday evening, January 1, at 20:46 local time. Some residents in the north and south of Bandung and Jatinangor claimed to have felt the shaking.
The Meteorology, Climatology, Geophysics Agency (BMKG) informed that the source was detected on land at 6.82 degrees South Latitude and 107.92 degrees East Longitude, or about four kilometers north of Sumedang City, and at a depth of ten kilometers.
The source of the latest quake is close to that of the series of previous quakes that have occurred since Sunday, December 31, 2023. The strongest of these, with a magnitude of 4.8, was located at 6.85 degrees south latitude and 107.94 degrees east longitude at a depth of 5 kilometers.
Hartanto, the head of BMKG Region II Tangerang, stated that it was a shallow quake. [It was] caused by an active fault in the local area.” he said in a written statement on Monday evening.
According to the agency’s analysis and public reports, the tremor was felt in the Rancakalong and Jatinangor areas in Sumedang Regency and Bandung with an intensity scale of III MMI. Meanwhile, the shaking in Cirebon, Garut, and Subang was at the II MMI level.
As of 21:15 local time, the BMKG has not recorded any aftershocks. People are advised to remain calm and not to be influenced by rumors about the earthquake.
