TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG predicted over 6 meters high waves in the northern waters of the Natuna Islands, North Natuna Sea starting Dec. 27.

Deputy of Meteorology of BMKG Guswanto said that the high waves will also potentially occur in several waters in Indonesia.

The reason for this spike in high waves, Guswanto believes, was due to the wind pattern in Indonesia. The wind in the northern part of Indonesia generally moves from Northeast to East with 4 to 30 knots velocity.

Meanwhile, for the southern part of Indonesia, the wind generally moves from Southeast to Southwest with 4 to 20 knots velocity. "The strongest wind movement is recorded in the northern part of Malaka Strait and North Natuna Sea," Guswanto said on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2023.

"[BMKG] urges citizens and fishermen to beware of the high-waves potential especially those using fishing boats and tongkang boats," Guswanto said.

According to BMKG, 1.25 to 2.5 meters high waves potential will occur in Aceh waters, western waters of Simeulue-Mentawai Islands, Enggano Islands waters-Bengkulu, western waters of Lampung, Indian Oceans west of Sumatra, western and southern part of the Sunda Straits, southern waters of Banten-East Java, southern waters of Bali-Sumba Island.

Additionally, the waves also potentially happen in the Bali Strait-Badung-Lombok-southern part of Alas, the western part of the Sumba Strait, the Indian Ocean south of Banten-NTT, the eastern part of Arafuru Sea, the southern waters of Anambas Islands, Bintan waters, the southern part of Natuna Islands-Midai Island.

Then, the northern part of Sambas waters, the Natuna Sea, the eastern part of the Sulawesi Sea, Sangihe waters-Talaud Regency, Sitaro Islands waters-Bitung, the northern part of Maluku Sea, west-north-east of Halmahera waters, Halmahera Sea, the northern part of West Papua-Papua, Pacific Ocean north of West Papua-Papua.

Meanwhile, the 2.5 to 4 meters waves will potentially occur in the northern part of Malaka Straiat, northern Sabang waters, the northern part of Anambas Islands waters, the southern part of Natuna Islands, and Subi waters-Serasan Regency.

Last, the highest waves forecasted by BMKG at 4 to 6 meters will occur in the northern part of the Natuna Islands, North Natuna Sea.
