Shallow Earthquake Rocks Purwakarta on Christmas Day

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1 rocked the Purwakarta area and its surroundings, Monday, December 25, 2023 at 12:48 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The earthquake that occurred on Christmas Day was located on land.
The central point or epicenter of the earthquake was at coordinates 6.47 degrees South Latitude and 107.45 degrees East Longitude. The distance is about 9 kilometers northeast of the center of Purwakarta Regency.
The earthquake was classified as shallow with a depth of 7 kilometers. "Due to local fault activity in the local area," said Head of BBMKG Region II Tangerang Hartanto, Monday, 25th of December 2023.
The impact of the earthquake as depicted by the BMKG shock level map and based on reports from the public, the shock was felt in the Purwakarta and Cikampek areas. However, the earthquake intensity scale range is classified as weak, between I - II MMI.
The vibrations were felt by at least a few people and made light hanging objects sway. So far there have been no reports of damage to buildings as a result of the earthquake.
From BMKG monitoring results up to 13:05 local time, there were no aftershocks. BMKG urges residents to remain calm and not be influenced by issues whose truth cannot be justified.
