TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cisadane River cleanup ship donated by Coldplay, Intercepter Neon Moon II, has arrived in Tanjung Burung Teluknaga Village, Tangerang Regency to intercept garbage before it reaches the ocean. It was received by the Tangerang Regency government on Monday, Nov. 28.
At least six tons of garbage will be intercepted and recycled when the ship operates at the end of January next year.
The regional secretary of the Tangerang Regency government Moch. Maesyal Rasyid stated that river waste management is a collective responsibility. Waste management in Cisadane River involves all the regions crossed by the river, namely Tangerang City, South Tangerang City, and Bogor Regency.
"We hope that the Neon Moon II Ship will improve the management of plastic waste in the river," he said on Thursday, Nov. 30.
Neon Moon II is a static ship consisting of two main parts, the frame and the trash bin with 800 kilograms x 6 units capacity.
Information received by Tempo mentioned that this Interceptor type was made by the Rotterdam-based Ocean Cleanup non-profit through MHE-Demag Malaysia sponsored by Coldplay, Coca-cola, and others.
The ship, according to the Head of Tangerang Environmental Office Fachrul Rozi, departed from Malaysia on Oct. 19, assembled in Koja Bahari Dock until Nov. 17, and was placed at the Cisadane River after obtaining a permit.
"We were informed that there have already been 20 Interceptor ships worldwide, and the one in Cisadane River was the 20th with third-generation machines," he said.
Neon Moon II is powered by solar panels. The ship will collect garbage in the river using conveyor belts to be placed into a 100-kilogram capacity trash bin. After reaching 800 kilograms, the ship will signal the waste bank in Tanjung Burung with a speedboat to pull the trash bins inland.
"Before operating [Neon Moon II], we are training twelve officers to manage and maintain the TOC while the waste management would be conducted by the locals of Tanjung Burung," Fachrul said.
Organic waste will be turned into compost and inorganic waste collected in the Cisadane River will be divided by its values, in which high-value waste will be sold to fund the operational fund of Neon Moon II. Meanwhile, the low-value waste will be processed. "We will install molding plastic in the future to turn the waste into something more beneficial such as paving blocks, roosters, or others," he concluded.
