TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The themes for the 2024 presidential election debates will be related to various aspects, including democracy and law enforcement, the General Elections Committee (KPU) stated.
"The themes will revolve around democracy, law enforcement, and so on," Head of KPU's Law and Supervision Division Mochammad Afifuddin remarked in Jakarta on Saturday, November 25, 2023.
On November 9, the KPU issued Decree No. 1621 of 2023 concerning the technical guidelines for the General Elections campaign, stating,"the themes will refer to national visions outlined in the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution and will be related to the National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN)."
Furthermore, the KPU is currently in the process of discussing the themes, dates, and locations for the presidential election debates, he said, adding that the committee will coordinate with relevant parties regarding the results of the discussion.
"The KPU seeks to hold the debates in other regions in addition to Jakarta. However, we need to communicate with liaison officers as well as representatives of presidential and vice presidential candidates regarding the plan," he said.
He then confirmed that Jakarta would at least host one of the five planned debates. To hold debates outside Jakarta, the committee will take several things into consideration.
Earlier on November 13, the KPU determined three pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates running in the 2024 presidential election, namely Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.
Later, on the next day, the KPU assigned serial numbers for the pairs, with Anies-Muhaimin claiming number one, Prabowo-Gibran clinching number two, and Ganjar-Mahfud possessing number three.
The committee has also determined that the campaign period for the upcoming election will start on November 28 and end on February 10 next year, while the election will take place on February 14, 2024.
