5.7M Earthquake Strikes North Maluku, 11 Aftershocks Recorded

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced a 5.7 Magnitude earthquake hit the North Beach of Sula Islands, North Maluku on Monday, July 17, 2023, at 11:42 a.m. According to the BMKG's Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, the earthquake was shallow, caused by crustal deformation. "The earthquake had a normal fault movement," he added.
The earthquake was located at sea 91 km away to the northeast of Sanana, Sula Islands, North Maluku at a 41 km depth.
The quake caused a IV MMI shaking in the Sula Islands and a III-IV MMI shaking in Sanana City and Labuha City, meaning, the intensity of the shaking could be felt by people inside a building in daylight. Meanwhile, a III MMI shaking was recorded in Namlea City and Namrole City, the shaking could be felt inside a house, similar to a truck passing by. Tidore City recorded a II-III MMI shaking.
Daryono mentioned, "Until 12:56 p.m., our monitoring has recorded 11 aftershocks with the biggest one at 4.1 magnitude."
He urged everyone to stay calm and vigilant. Currently, no reports on casualty and no warnings of a tsunami had been issued. Daryono also reminded the public to avoid crumbling buildings.
