TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a series of weak earthquakes from the movement of the Cirebon Fault on Thursday, June 15, 2023. At least seven quakes were detected, but only four of them whose data could be processed as Tempo received the information at 20:49 Jakarta time.
“The BMKG monitoring results show that there are four quakes whose parameters can be determined, the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center Daryono said on Thursday evening, June 15.
The first quake occurred at 06:20 local time with a magnitude of 2.9 and from a depth of 5 kilometers. It was felt at the intensity of MMI level II. Some Cirebon residents felt the tremor that made the light-hanging objects sway.
The second quake occurred at 07:25 local time with a magnitude of 3.2, from a depth of 7 kilometers. Some residents felt the shaking as if a truck is passing by as it was on the intensity of MMI level III. In Palimanan, the tremor was detected at intensity level II of MMI.
The third earthquake occurred at 07:37 local time with a magnitude of 2.5 from a depth of 7 kilometers, followed by a 2.9-magnitude quake at 16:06 local time from a depth of 10 kilometers. The tremor’s intensity was at MMI level II.
Daryono confirmed the BMKG’s previous statement that they were shallow quakes allegedly due to the activity of the Cirebon Fault. Thus, people might hear the sound of an explosion.
“The sudden deformation of subsurface rocks at shallow depths can indeed trigger a thumping sound,” he explained, adding that the agency has not yet received any reports of the damage caused by the quakes.
However, Daryono emphasized that Cirebon is a quake-prone area. BMKG noted that at least the region had experienced four destructive quakes. The first was the October 16, 1847 quake that had an intensity of VII MMI and caused damage to more than 200 houses.
Next, the November 30, 1853 quake with the intensity of VI MMI and the June 16, 1971 quake destroyed many residential houses. The most recent destructive earthquake in Cirebon occurred on December 11, 2020, with a magnitude of 4.2 which damaged 25 houses.
