Hundreds of Persons with Disabilities Participating in University Enrollment Tests in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of persons with disabilities registered for the 2023 Computer-Based Writing Examination (UTBK) to enroll in state universities. The series of exams starts today, May 8, with 59 people who are blind or have impaired visions as well as 616 disabled people taking the tests in 47 state universities' UTBK centers.

Mochamad Ashari, general chairman for the National Selection of New Student Admissions, said that the largest number of blind participants was at the Indonesian Education University (UPI) Bandung, a total of 20 people. Fourteen others took the test at the UTBK center of the University of Indonesia, and six at the State University of Surabaya.

There were also 616 people with disabilities who took the test, mostly in Jakarta with 67 people, followed by the University of North Sumatra (42) and UPI Bandung (41).

Ahmad Muzakir, head of the New Student Recruitment Division at the UPI Education Directorate, said that 14 visually impaired persons at the UPI UTBK Center are in a special room to take the exam with a special time slot, which is on Wednesday morning, May 10.

This year's total number of people participating in the UTBK 2023 was 803,852 people, around 3,000 more compared to last year. They took the enrollment tests in 74 UTBK Centers or universities across Indonesia. The first batch of the test is on May 8 to 14, and the second batch starts a week after that.
