TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) Economist Eko Listiyanto on Thursday said MSMEs and corporations will share losses as a direct effect of Indonesia's revocation as host for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
"From an economic standpoint, some of those affected include ticket sales, advertising potential from sponsors, MSME retailers of t-shirts and various accessories or soccer merchandises, hospitality sector, transportation, and also performers during the opening and closing ceremonies," the economist wrote in a text message to Tempo on March 30.
His sentiments were agreed upon by a company that is one of the license holders for the U-20 World Cup merchandise, Juara Raga Adidaya or Juaraga. This company claimed it had already produced 53 pieces of merchandise.
“As a license holder for the U-20 World Cup tournament, surely we feel the great effect of the cancelation,” said the company in a press statement on Thursday. “This surely affects producers, raw material source providers, and SMEs that we partner with.”
Meanwhile, the Central Java branch of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) said they were disappointed that the U-20 World Cup is not held in Indonesia. As is known, Solo is one of the cities planned to host a number of the world cup matches.
Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) President Erick Thohir has lobbied with the International Football Federation (FIFA) to discuss the continuation of the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia following the widespread rejection of the participation of the Israeli national team. Unfortunately, this lobby attempt failed.
FIFA revoked Indonesia's status as the host for the 2023 U-20 World Cup and Erick Thohir stated that he fully accepts FIFA's decision.
