TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Hanlyn Jaya Mandiri said it would take full responsibility over the incident that put the MT Kristin ship on fire, Sunday, March 26. The company said it has full responsibility over the safety of the ship's crew and cargo, ship handling, and mitigating risks of environmental impacts.
"We are also ready to collaborate with related parties to take the necessary steps, both for examining the impact and investigating the cause of the fire," Hanlyn Jaya Mandiri director Tedi Supriadi said in a written statement, Tuesday, March 28.
Hanlyn Jaya Mandiri is the owner of the MT Kristin ship that was rented by PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) to carry and ship the Pertalite gasoline. The ship loaded the fuel from the Tuban Fuel Terminal and sailed towards the Integrated Terminal Ampenan and Fuel Terminal Sanggar. It caught fire in the waters of Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara.
The ship has been evacuated and is now docked at the pier of PT Pantai Damai Sejahtera (PDS) in West Lombok.
Tedi said the company continues to coordinate with the relevant stakeholders and the police of West Nusa Tenggara, the BASARNAS (National Search and Rescue Agency), and others, to ensure that the incident is addressed according to safety standards, and that it will not have an environmental impact.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated. However, Pertamina International Shipping suspected that the fire source was the forecastle or the front mooring deck.
During the incident, Pertamina Shipping's corporate secretary Muh. Aryomekka Fird said, all 17 crew members tried to put out the fire but failed. During the evacuation process, three crew members jumped into the sea.
"The other 14 crew members have been confirmed safe. During the evacuation process, the ship's crew was assisted by local fishermen," he said in a written statement, Sunday, March 26.
One member who jumped ship was found on Monday, March 27. Rescuers are still searching for the other two.
