TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) hoped that the government and the House of Representatives can pass the Asset Confiscation Bill soon. The KPK said that the passing of this bill will provide a deterrent effect for perpetrators of corrupt practices in Indonesia.
"The truth is, we have been pushing for the bill's passing for a long time. We did it two years ago as well," KPK spokesman Ali Fikri said at the KPK building in Jakarta on Thursday, February 9, 2023.
According to Ali, President Joko Widodo also supports the ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill, as Jokowi had stated during the World Anti-corruption Day ceremony two years ago.
"We hope that in 2023 the bill can be included in the priority national legislation program," Ali said.
Ali said the Asset Confiscation Bill could be a valuable asset in the prosecution of criminal acts of corruption as it will help give the corruptor a deterrent effect. He said that the Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK) has always tried to ensure that corruption defendants are punished by paying money as well as being sentenced to physical imprisonment.
On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, President Joko Widodo reiterated his wish for his ministers and the DPR to fast-track the Assets Confiscation Bill's discussion. His statement came as a response to Indonesia's Corruption Perception Index score—released by Transparency International Indonesia—which declined from 38 to 34 points in 2022.
