BSSN Spills Possible Inafis Data Breach

25 June 2024 19:48 WIB

Head of the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) Hinsa Siburian (third from right) explains about the data leak by hackers Bjorka at the BSSN Headquarters, Sawangan, Depok, West Java, Tuesday, September 13, 2022. Tempo/Fajar Pebrianto

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) revealed the possible data breach belonging to the police's Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (Inafis), which was sold on the dark web. In response, the National Police would check and conduct mitigation measures to prevent a recurrence.

“We will mitigate it, we will check it again because these are interesting issues at the moment,” the National Police’s Chief of the Public Relations Division, Inspector General Sandi Nugroho, said at the Police Headquarters in Jakarta, on Tuesday, June 25.

Sandi said that measures must be taken to prevent data leaks from happening again in the future. “The National Police will obviously collaborate with other stakeholders to address this problem,” he said.

Previously, BSSN Head Hinsa Siburian admitted that the police’s Inafis data had been leaked and sold on the dark web. However, the breached data was old, so the incident did not affect services at the Inafis.

“Based on the coordination with the police, the data was found from the dark web or black market. So of course we will cross-check and confirm with the police. They (the police) claim that it is old data,” Hinsa said during a press conference at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Kominfo) Building on Monday, June 24.

Hinsa did not specify whether the data breach was the result of the ransomware attack on the Temporary National Data Center (PDNS) but confirmed that the cyberattacks targeting the PDNS include the LockBit 3.0 variant that had been detected since June 20. Until now, BSSN and related agencies are still striving to isolate or secure the systems affected by this attack.
