TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that a magnitude 5.3 earthquake had struck the northern region of Sumbawa in the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on Monday noon, February 6, 2023.
The epicenter of the earthquake that shook the region at 14:11 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) was located 74 kilometers off the coast of Saringi Island in NTB at a depth of 317 kilometers.
BMKG head of earthquake and tsunami Daryono asserted that the earthquake was a deep earthquake caused by the deformation of the Indo-Australian fault, "Which is popularly known as a Benioff quake," Daryono wrote in a statement.
"Damages caused by the earthquake have yet to be reported," said Daryono. "The modeling shows that the earthquake will not potentially cause a tsunami."
No aftershocks have been reported.
