TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) warned of the potential for tidal flood triggered by the full moon on February 2 to February 6, 2023. The agency issued the warning through its Instagram account @bpbddkijakarta on Thursday, February 2, 2023.
"The phenomenon of the full moon has the potential to increase the level of sea water which may cause coastal flooding at 07:00 to 10:00 WIB [Jakarta time]," the agency announced on its social media as quoted on Friday, February 3, 2023.
Nine areas off the coast of Jakarta that may be potentially affected by the flood include Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Penjaringan, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing, and Kalibaru.
The agency called on the public to remain cautious and be on alert to anticipate the tidal flood. The people can monitor the latest conditions via Jakarta BPBD’s website.
"In an emergency, immediately contact the Jakarta Alert Call Center 112," the agency noted.
On Tuesday, January 3, 2023, Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono stated that the government would push for the construction of a coastal embankment on the north coast of the city as one of the efforts to deal with coastal flooding.
According to Heru, the 46-kilometer-long coastal embankment was included in Phase A of the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) project. The government was also finalizing the concept of a giant sea wall. Both projects were being realized by the central government in tandem with the provincial government.
"If we want Jakarta to be safe for the next 100 years [from tidal flooding], we must build a giant sea wall [and] a coastal embankment," said Budi who is also the Head of the Presidential Secretariat.
