TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Maluku regional official Djati Cipto Kuncoro announced that the tsunami early warning was revoked after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake rocked Maluku and its vicinity on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at 02:47 eastern Indonesian time (WIT).

“The tsunami warning caused by the earthquake has been declared over,” said Djati on Tuesday morning, January 10, 2023.

According to him, this intermediate earthquake was generated by the subduction activity of the Banda Sea that occurred on a thrust fault based on the analysis.

“The results of the BMKG analysis show that the epicenter of the quake was located at coordinates 7.37° South Latitude; 130.23° East Longitude,” he informed, adding that it was precisely located in the sea, 136 km to the Northwest of Maluku, West Southeastern Maluku, and at a depth of 130 km.

BMKG appealed to people in the earthquake-affected areas not to believe false information, stay calm, and get updated information from official sources.

Previously, BMKG issued a tsunami warning at Siaga (Watch) status for Central Maluku, Southeast Maluku Islands, West Southeast Maluku, Yamdena Island, and Ambon City, as well as at Waspada (Caution) status for Southeast Maluku, East Seram, West Seram, Buru, Wakatobi, Kendari, Watulumango Island, Kendari Islands, Southern Konawe, Kendari City, and Kendari.

As of 06:00 WIT, BMKG detected four aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.7, 4.8, 4.5, and 4.1 respectively.
