KPK to Allow Treatment Abroad for Papua Governor under Detainee Status

6 January 2023 12:23 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The deputy chairperson of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Alexander Marwata on Thursday said the anti-graft agency will allow Papua governor Lukas Enembe – who is a suspect of alleged bribe – to seek health treatment overseas under one condition; the governor must be willing to be taken as a KPK prisoner.

“And surely, his treatment overseas will be accompanied by officials from KPK,” said Marwata on Thursday, January 5.

Another option offered by the KPK is to allow Lukas to seek treatment in Jakarta. Alex said that if the hospitals in the capital city are still unable to handle Lukas Enembe’s mysterious illness, then the KPK would give permission for medical treatment abroad.

"We have recommended treatment at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital. If it still can't be handled, then we will give permission for medical treatment outside with supervision from the KPK," he elaborated.

Lukas Enembe Controversially Inaugurates Government Office when Being Sick

As reported earlier, KPK has taken attention to the presence of Papua governor Lukas Enembe at the inauguration of his official headquarters. Enembe has failed to appear in multiple KPK summonses over corruption allegations by claiming to be severely ill.

“Based on news reports, he inaugurated the governor’s headquarters. What does this mean? This shows the person in question is able to walk and at least provide an acceptance speech. His ability to communicate is not hampered and this has grabbed our attention,” said the KPK deputy in a press conference on January 5.

KPK named Lukas Enembe and Tabi Bangun Papua director Rijatono Lakka as suspects of alleged bribery in the region’s major infrastructure construction projects. KPK investigators suspect the Papua governor of accepting an Rp1 billion bribe from the developer.

The agency has detained Lakka for 20 days starting from January 5th but has not yet detained Lukas Enembe.

Lukas Enembe failed to appear in the KPK investigation summons on September 12, 2022, and September 23, 2022. The governor had even submitted a request to undergo treatment at a Singapore hospital.
