Clean Energy; ESDM Ministry to Distribute 680,000 Rice Cookers

25 November 2022 16:17 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry planned to distribute 680,000 units of electric rice cookers in order to support the use of clean energy. The program was expected to increase electricity consumption per capita or e-cooking and save cooking costs.

"Rice cookers will be given to the beneficiary families or KPM. The KPM data will, of course, refer to the Social Affairs Ministry's data," said ESDM Ministry's official Edi Pratikno in a virtual public discussion on Friday, November 25, 2022.

Edi explained that the electric rice cooker will be distributed throughout Indonesia using the state budget in 2023. The government provides a package of Rp 500,000 for each KPM. According to him, beneficiaries of the program do not need to increase their house’s power.

The program is targeted at households with 450 VA or 900 VA power supplies, which according to the state-owned electricity company PLN, still rely on gas stoves to cook rice. Target households may claim the aid after administrative validation from the village head.

Electric Rice Cooker More Efficient

Edi explained that the cost of cooking rice with an electric cooker is more efficient compared to a gas stove. Cooking rice using a gas stove will consume 2.4 kg of LPG monthly, which equals to Rp 16,800.

Meanwhile, the monthly energy consumption for cooking rice using an electric rice cooker is only 5.25 kWh, and 19.80 kWh in rice warming mode. Consequently, the cost of cooking rice can be reduced to Rp 10,396 per month, which saves Rp 6,404 per month.

Additionally, the ESDM Ministry predicted that the conversion will generate a potential benefit of up to Rp 680,000 per household in 2023. The government can also save gas subsidies up to Rp 52.2 billion of the total procurement of Rp 340 billion. In addition, the conversion is predicted to reduce LPG volume by 19,600 tons and save US$26.88 million in foreign exchange reserves.
