TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani during her acceptance speech in the G20 side event, Parliamentary 20 (P20), on Wednesday said that the global community is attempting to recover socially and economically following the crippling effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
She said that the pandemic's after-effects on the domestic economy and social life must be responded to with appropriate fiscal and monetary policies. Thus, economic and social recovery can go hand in hand for the welfare of the people.
In her speech, Puan explained that the world's parliaments still have homework to complete sustainable development. Among them are climate change, green economy, food, and energy security, to gender equality.
“We also still have a number of global agendas in completing sustainable development. These include issues of climate change, the environment, the green economy, food, and energy security, as well as gender equality and women's empowerment," said Puan at the P20 forum at the DPR headquarters, Jakarta, Wednesday, October 5.
According to her, the meeting of parliamentary representatives at the P20 forum can build a commitment to cooperation in responding to this global turmoil and challenges. Puan also asserted that parliament could provide legitimacy for the government's efforts to realize positive policies.
"Indonesia invites the P20 parliament, through multilateralism, to seek solutions and consensus in facing an economic recession, overcoming the ‘scary effects’ of global economic turmoil, accelerating the economic transformation to create wider people's welfare, and strengthening the G20 orchestration in moving the sustainable development agenda," said the House Speaker.
