5.7 M Earthquake Hit Gorontalo, Other Sulawesi Regions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hits Gorontalo Province and surrounding regions in North Sulawesi on Thursday afternoon, August 18, 2022.
The quake was centered in the sea, 47 kilometers southeast of Bolaang Uki. The shaking was felt in Gorontalo and Bone Bolango, as well as Bolaang Mongondow of North Sulawesi up to level IV of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG, the quake occurred at 14:46 Jakarta time or 15:46 local time. The epicenter was recorded from a depth of 155 kilometers.
The agency stated that the quake had no potential to cause a tsunami.
BMKG also noted that the tremor was felt at level III of the MMI scale in East Luwu. A weaker intensity at level II-III was also reported in Luwuk, Bitung, Kotamobagu, Unauna, North Minahasa, and Taliabu. The level II shaking was also confirmed in other areas such as Poso.
