Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Hits West Sulawesi, Tremor Felt until Kalimantan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit Mamuju, West Sulawesi on Wednesday, June 8, at 12:32 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Based on the initial data reported by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake was located at 2.74 degrees South Latitude and 118.54 East Longitude, or 43 kilometers southwest of Mamuju, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
It was felt at level V of the MMI scale in Mamuju. Nearly everyone in the region felt the shaking, even goods were broken and splattered, and poles and big stuff were swaying.
Meanwhile, it was felt at the level IV of MMI scale in Majene, level III in Pinrang, level II-III in Pali, Samarinda, Paser, and level II in Sidrap, Pangkep, Makassar, Masamba, Palopo.
On its media social, BMKG said that many people felt the shaking, mentioning several regions such as Balikpapan, Makassar, Gowa, Penajam, Kotabaru, Palopo, Martapura, Enrekang, Samarida, and Toraja.
The damages and victims caused by the earthquake were still unknown. But the meteorology agency stated that the quake did not trigger a tsunami.
