TEMPO.CO, JakartaA total of 160 street vendors in Petak Sembilan, Taman Sari, will be relocated to Glodok market, West Jakarta. The city government planned to restore the road function in the Chinatown area for pedestrians.

“This relocation is aimed at restoring the function of the road in Petak Sembilan,” said Taman Sari Sub-district Head Agus Sulaeman in Jakarta as quoted from Antara, Wednesday, March 2.

To date, four-wheeled vehicles could not pass the road which turned into a traditional market as it is crowded with street vendors. The government hoped that the road could be passed by vehicles after the construction project of MRT Jakarta station in Taman Sari is completed.

According to Agus, the majority of street vendors agreed to be relocated. Tamansari sub-district had given three options in the meeting with the traders, including relocation to Glodok Market and revitalization of street vendors. The traders chose relocation.

The sub-district head and representatives of street vendors and city-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya will have a meeting on Monday, March 7, to discuss the relocation. Traders will need to pay the rental price for kiosks at the market which is under the auspices of PD Pasar Jaya.

“We ask PD Pasar Jaya not to burden traders too much. I hope the rental price is not too expensive,” Agus added.

Street vendors in the Tamansari area generally sell a variety of snacks, meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables. Their existence makes Petak Sembilan famous as one of the culinary centers in Jakarta that attract many tourists.
