TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A local resident of Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta, Ani Purwanti, recalled her experience witnessing frequent street brawls between local youngsters that would take place in her neighborhood. She, therefore, personally requested the Metro Jaya Police Chief Insp. Gen. Fadli Imran to facilitate them with a boxing ring instead.
“So, you’re asking for a [boxing] ring to be made there?” said the police chief in a public event the police held on December 30.
In the exchange between Purwanti and the police chief, she mentioned the specific areas which are often used by the teens as battlegrounds. The police chief himself found the areas she mentioned was familiar as he once led the Tanah Abang police sector.
She continued to say that the kids like to brawl. "Give them this [boxing ring] where they could go at it one-on-one.”
Fadli Imran did not immediately approve of this radical idea and only said that her suggestion will be considered by the Metro Jaya Police. “That’s not a bad idea actually, let us consider it first,” he added.
In terms of unusual ideas to solve social issues, the Metro Jaya Police recently announced it would facilitate illegal street racers in an official event overseen by police, which they said is an attempt to reduce the number of road accidents.
