Govt Proposes Budget Increase on Legal Aid for the Poor

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Law and Human Rights Ministry (Kemenkumham) has proposed to the House of Representatives (DPR) to increase the budget ceiling of Rp55 billion to fund the ministry’s program which provides legal assistance for poor Indonesians.

Citing Antaranews, the law and human rights deputy minister Eddy Hiariej on June 8 has proposed litigation legal assistance program for 5,699 Indonesians under a budget of Rp47.8 billion and non-litigation assistance for 758 community groups for Rp8.4 billion across 33 provinces in Indonesia. 

The deputy minister also proposed to increase the 2022 budget ceiling in the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission II budget meeting in Jakarta.

“The total amount of budget Kemenkumham proposes is Rp2.74 trillion,” said the Deputy Minister on Monday.

The legal assistance for the poor, in its application, will be conducted by the National Law Development Agency (BPHN) by recruiting legal aid organizations that have been previously selected. Head of the BPHN Dwi Rahayu Eka Setyowati said that the recipients of the legal aid assistance are based on Law No.16/2011 on legal aid Article 5 (1 and 2).
