TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has signed Presidential Regulation No.33/2021 on the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) which effectively merged four research institutions into one.
The government has set a deadline of a minimum of two years for the merger of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN), and the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN).
BRIN was initially founded in 2019 after the passing of the Law (UU) on the Sciences and Technology National System under the Research and Technology Ministry (Kemenristek).
The integration was made possible since BRIN would become an independent autonomous body; no longer part of Kemenristek. This also means that BRIN will conduct the tasks and function of the ministry.
President Jokowi has inaugurated Laksana Tri Handoko to lead BRIN on April 28, 2021, and Presidential Regulation No.33/2021 also states that BRIN will directly report to the President upon conducting research, developments, studies, and inventions.
