Bodies of Sinking Boat Victims in Jakarta Bay Taken to Police Hospital

22 March 2021 13:56 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The bodies of three victims in the boat sink incident at Jakarta Bay have been evacuated. On Sunday noon, March 21, 13 people drowned during the incident.

"The TNI Navy brought the bodies to the Polairud, and from there they were taken to the Police Hospital in Kramat Jati," the Jakarta Search and Rescue chief of operations, Kamal Riswandi, told Tempo on Monday, 22 March.

The victims drowned when they were fishing on a fishermen's boat. The boat capsized after being hit by high waves during the windy day.

Officials said that the small motor boat was taking fishermen back from the sea to return to shore. However, bad weather and big waves killed the ship's engine before reaching the coast.

The captain tried to fix the ship's engine, but was unsuccessful because it was submerged in sea water. There were no life vests on board.
