TNI Commander Sees Social Media, Radicals as Social Weapons

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) Commander Hadi Tjahjanto in Tuesday’s meeting with military leaders at the TNI headquarters in East Jakarta argues that the advancement in science and technology has given birth to new ‘social weapons’ that he believes spread in cyber realms such as the internet and social media.
The military commander believes that the power of internet and social media upon potentially spreading propaganda, radical ideas, and terrorism must be overcome.
“The internet has become a domain in recruiting a generation of radicals and terrorists that also utilize the platform upon spreading its propaganda,” said the military commander.
He claims the strength embedded in social media upon inciting real life riots can be seen in the riots that broke out in European countries, United States, Myanmar, and Thailand.
During the meeting, Hadi Tjahjanto also acknowledged and conveyed his utmost appreciation for TNI soldiers stationed nationwide in conflict-prone areas and borders.
