TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The price of eggs at the farmers' level dropped to Rp16,000-Rp17,000 per kilogram. The national Layer Breeders Association said that prices plunged as the eggs are not absorbed by markets particularly in Greater Jakarta and Bandung.
Normally, egg price at the farmers' level is between Rp19,000 and Rp20,000.
"There is no demand from traders in Greater Jakarta and Bandung. Breeders are panicking because production has not stopped," Layer Breeders Association Presidium chairman Ki Musbar Mesdi told Tempo, Monday, January 25.
He said that demand from those areas has been declining by 20 to 30 percent since the start of this year. Breeders also have a hard time distributing to the eastern parts of Indonesia.
Musbar said that the price usually declines after Christmas and New Year's holidays only. To have the decline continuing to the last week of January is unusual.
With low demand from market traders, warehouses have piling stocks, almost to their full capacity.
