Expert Quips Govt Meetings Dominated by Vaccine Talks Instead of Mitigation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia epidemiologist Pandu Riono on Tuesday urged the central government to act upon the declining condition of Indonesia’s Covid-19 pandemic and quipped on President Jokowi’s limited meeting sessions that focus more on the vaccine.
“People that want to explain about the worsening situation of the pandemic lose to [discussions about] vaccines,” said Pandu Riono on January 5.
According to him, Cabinet meetings mostly discuss the technical aspects of the national vaccination program such as its schedule, distribution processes, and the perfect moment for President Jokowi to be the first recipient of the vaccine.
He maintains that it should be put aside to talk about what he sees as a terrible situation in terms of the handling of the pandemic, which is evident in the growing number of daily confirmed cases, dropping number of available isolation beds, and the mortality rate that is yet able to be suppressed.
In Twitter he also mentioned enforcing large-scale social restrictions not only in the capital city of Jakarta but also in other major cities in the Java Island.
