TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) announced that the emergence of low pressure in the south of Java Island’s western region as the dominant factor causing heavy rain to continuously fall over the greater Jakarta area (JABODETABEK) and its vicinity on Sunday, December 6.
Head of the BPPT weather modification technology, Job Arifian, on Monday said that the low pressure caused a convergence of air mass buildup in the western part of Java Island which is forecasted to continue to take place until Friday, December 11.
“If the low pressure area continues to travel to the east, the effects could take place over Central Java and East Java,” said Arifian on December 7. “But if they move to the southeast region and away from Java Island the effects can eventually die out.”
The intense rain for the past several days, he implied, could be attributed to the La Nina phenomenon over the east and west region of the Pacific Ocean. Constant heavy rain has fallen over the Greater Jakarta Area by the end of the first week of December.
