TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The health-caring community coalition (KOMPAK) had issued a legal notice (somasi) against Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto calling for the minister to revise the government regulation (PP) No.109/2012 on ‘safeguarding materials containing addictive substances for tobacco products for health.’
“As of today on November 12, the Indonesian society component has issued a somasi [legal notice] within 14 days [calling for] the health ministry to complete the government regulation’s revision,” said Tubagus Haryo Karbyanto, the National Commission for Tobacco Control manager in Thursday’s online event.
Apart from filing a legal notice against Minister Terawan, this coalition is also virtually rallying in front of the Health Ministry headquarter.
According to Tubagus, discussions regarding this matter had deadlocked after two letters had been sent to the Health Ministry in November 2019 and August 2020.
“Signs suggest that it is stuck at the Health Ministry’s level. Is this part of an intervention from the tobacco industry? The Health Minister should have been more assertive so that any hurdles that arise are known by the public,” he said.
