Indonesia Suffers the Most in ASEAN Car Sales Due to the Pandemic

10 November 2020 13:05 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The global-scale of the coronavirus pandemic has caused car sales to slump in many countries, which includes Indonesia that had suffered the most from the effects of the pandemic compared to other ASEAN countries.

Based on the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF) records on Monday, November 9, the number of cars sold in Indonesia up to September this year was 372,046 vehicles, which is a 50.7 percent drop compared to last year.

The second country most affected by the slumping car sales is the Philippines which saw a 44.6 percent drop and is followed by SIngapore with 44.4 percent drop.

Thailand, as Indonesia’s direct competitor in the automotive industry, was able to record 534,765 sales in its domestic market from January to September 2020. This means Thailand only suffered a 29.8 percent drop in car sales.

Thailand also recorded a 2.2 percent growth in new car sales compared to 2019 with 77.907 cars sold.

The AAF records also shows that eight ASEAN countries recorded a total of 1,640,019 car sales, which is a 35.7 percent drop collectively compared to the pre-pandemic times.
