TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati - in her presence at the B20 Saudi Arabia Summit - assures that each and every country in the world must not face the economic effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic alone.
“Many countries will face major fiscal burdens after Covid,” said Sri Mulyani on Monday in the summit that highlights multilateralism in the new ‘pandemic era’.
She gave an example of low-income nations that she believes need restructuring or support in the form of loans to be able to rise again post-pandemic and kickstart their developments again. Sri Mulyani believes the pandemic will push the central bank to underpin deficit financing that has drastically increased.
The finance minister also said multilateral organizations need to communicate that this policy does not violate the independence of a central bank or that the pandemic will not be used as a reason to conduct irresponsible fiscal spendings.
Sri Mulyani believes multilateral partnerships must be strengthened as countries enter the phase where post-pandemic vaccinations are being prepared and noted that countries must work together as a collective effort in terms of COVID-19 vaccines as she believes this will be able to raise the global economy.
