TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Founder of the Ekologis Misykat Al-Anwar Islamic boarding school, Roy Murtadho, asserted that articles related to forestry law included in the Job Creation Law can potentially increase agrarian conflicts.
"The criminalization of farmers and indigenous peoples' rights for their lands will get worse. This is due to the government's attempt to strengthen Law No.41 of 1999 on Forestry and Law No. 18 of 2013 concerning Prevention of Forest Destruction," said Roy in a virtual press conference on Youtube on Tuesday, October 6, 2020.
Roy claimed that throughout 2019, there have been at least 200 cases of criminalization of farmers and indigenous people attributed to Law No. 41 of 1999 and Law No. 18 of 2013. Rouy further argued that the condition will get even worse with the recent enactment of the Job Creation Law, which relaxes requirement for businesses to determine forest areas to be utilized by allowing the use of information technology and satellite coordinates without the need for field inspection.
Roy Murtadho also questions the effectiveness of the Job Creation Law that relaxes the requirement for a company to conduct environmental impact analysis (Amdal) without government supervision, which he believes will escalate agrarian conflicts.
