Tokopedia Sees Exponential Growth in Merchants amid Pandemic

8 September 2020 23:08 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaTokopedia VP of corporate communications, Nuraini Razak, on Tuesday, Sept. 8, announced there have been over 9 million active merchants in the Indonesian-made platform, which according to Razak, comprise 100-percent of MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises).

During the virtual press conference, she mentioned that the coronavirus pandemic that hit the nation had presented an unprecedented economic pressure, “However, we have seen up to 1.8 million growth and nearly 2 million traders since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Razak claimed Tokopedia currently accommodates around 100 million active customers searching for over 350 million products available in e-commerce. They also claimed that it serves over 98 percent of sub-districts in Indonesia.

“So, hopefully, more people will further support local MSMEs,” she said.

She revealed that customers, in general, have mostly bought daily fashion products which are reflected in the sales of casual clothes and have also seen a drop in sales of wedding or party outfits.

The social restriction imposed by the Indonesian government at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic has also caused a rise in sales of food and beverage products as many people are adapting to stay at home and engaging more in-home cookery.
