Lodging Broadcasting Law Judicial Review, RCTI: Not to Curb Creativity

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - MNC Group Corporate Legal Director, Christophorus, explained  that the company’s filing a judicial review of the law on broadcasting law (UU Penyiaran) was not an attempt to curb the creativity of people working in the creative industry.

He said that the judicial review filed by MNC’s subsidiary, RCTI and iNews TV, sought to push the government to oversee the contents that were being streamed through the medium of the internet.

“The talent programs that we have launched, such as e-sports and others, go through the medium of the Internet and have attracted many creative people. How are we silencing [creativity]?,” said Christophorus on Friday.

According to Chris, the corporation is pushing for the rise of the creative industry with a new set of regulations. RCTI and iNews TV argued that the internet-based broadcasting regulation, stipulated by Article 1 (2) of Law No. 32/2002, was ambiguous.

They said that a few regulations contained in the law involved legal uncertainties and were asking internet-based live-streaming services to be included in the Broadcasting Law. “We intend to have the Constitutional Court (MK) interpret broadcasting with the internet as its platform,” said Chris.
