Beware of Possible Crime Taking Advantage of COVID-19 Pandemic

13 March 2020 08:04 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Lampung Police on March 10 issued a circular notice to the region’s entire police force warning authorities to closely monitor a new type of crime taking advantage of the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.

The circular letter Tempo obtained elaborates about a crime involving criminals pretending to be health officials spraying disinfectants, which is then used by the criminals to commit house invasion or robberies.

The letter specifically ordered police chiefs to “act accordingly to counter the new crime” by educating residents of Lampung and enforce the law accordingly that would create a deterrent effect on the criminals.

However, when asked for confirmation on Thursday, March 12, the Indonesian National Police’s spokesman Brigadier General Argo Yuwono assured that no criminal modus operandi to date have taken advantage of the COVID-19 crisis and clarified that “this is a preventive measure to anticipate new types of crime.”
