TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said the government would make adjustments to the top ceiling of duty-free items as well as import taxes. Right now, the maximum value of duty-free goods is US$ 75 per person per day.
Sri said that the limit has not been successful in preventing rogue importers from cheating, whether by shipping the goods separately or by manipulating prices.
The minister added that her department will work with the Trade Ministry to determine a value that can prevent the entry of imported goods, "especially for those with an upper limit of US$75, which are consumer goods," she said in Jakarta Tuesday, December 17.
Meanwhile, Customs and Excise director general Heru Pambudi said he would further study and review Minister Sri's instructions.
A threshold revision, Heru said, is needed considering the uptrend of e-commerce transactions, which has now reached an average of 45 million transactions per year.
