TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, had been awarded The Straits Times Asian of The Year 2019 after the Singapore-based broadsheet newspaper deemed the president as a “unifying figure in an age of chaos and disruption.”
Other than Jokowi, other international figures who received the same award in previous years include; Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew; Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi; and China’s President Xi Jinping.
Responding to the acknowledgment, Presidential spokesman Fadjroel Rachman in a written statement expressed gratitude and called the achievement as a product of “Smart collective effort with fellow Indonesians.”
According to Fadjroel, the award is a prestigious award that acknowledges the hard work of all Indonesians and can kick-start the government’s view in developing human resources, infrastructure, bureaucracy simplicity, regulations, and economic transformation.
