Jokowi Revives TNI's Deputy Commander Position in Latest Decree

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has decided to revive the position of National Armed Forces (TNI) deputy commander within Indonesia’s military ranks that in accordance of President’s Decree No.65/2019.
The existence of a deputy commander is mentioned in Article 13 (1) as sourced from the State Secretary’s press release on Wednesday, November 6; “The TNI main headquarters consist of: a. Leadership positions: 1. Commander; and 2. Deputy Commander.”
Based on this decree, the position as deputy commander will be filled by high officer generals, which is tasked to create the interoperability of the Military’s “Tri Marta.” Those filling the position would directly report to the Commander.
Deputy Commanders are also tasked to assist the daily task of the commander and provide recommendations in terms of state defense.
It is reported that President Jokowi issued this new presidential decree in considering a number of strategic reasons. The last time a deputy commander existed within TNI’s ranks was 20 years ago with Fachrul Razi, before the position was erased by former late president Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid.
