TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo appointed Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician John Wempi Wetipo as the Deputy Minister of Public Works and Housing at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Friday, October 25.
The former Papua’s Jayawijaya Regent would assist Minister Basuki Hadimuljono.
Wempi said that according to President Jokowi the monitoring of the country's development projects was still substandard, thus he would step up the monitoring so the visions and missions of the President and Vice President that had yet to be met in the 2014-2019 period could be fulfilled in the 2019-2024 period.
Additionally, the President highlighted the infrastructure in Indonesia’s eastern regions. “So he advised that I should focus on accelerating infrastructure development in the country’s eastern parts,” said Wempi.
John Wempi Wetipo previously served as Jayawijaya Regent for two terms: 2008-2013 and 2013-2018. He contested the 2018 Papua Gubernatorial Election and lost to incumbent Lukas Enembe.
