PDIP's Puan Maharani Slated as First Female House Speaker

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The notable Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician, Puan Maharani, was illustrious upon her candidacy as House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker.
“This will be the first female House Speaker after 70 years. I hope it will be an inspiration,” said Puan at the PDIP faction offices in the Senayan Parliamentary Complex on Tuesday, October 1.
According to Puan, she has officially resigned from her position in President Jokowi’s Cabinet prior to her inauguration as House member. The former Coordinating Minister of Development and Cultural Affairs said she has asked permission from the President.
The position as House Speaker is granted upon PDIP members as the political party - led by Puan’s mother Megawati Soekarnoputri - that won the simultaneous general election.
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker will be appointed to the following Party that had the most votes following PDIP. This position is available for members from Golkar, Gerindra, PKB, and NasDem parties.
