TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, recalled that third Indonesian president Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, or BJ Habibie, is a notable and most deserving figure upon shaping Indonesia’s free press.
He said that the uncensored press of today is able to be formed after Habibie ratified Law No.40/1999 regarding the press.
“Journalistic mass media owe it all to Pak Habibie,” said Anies at Jakarta’s City Hall on Wednesday, September 11.
He also said that Habibie’s service to the industry opened the door for a more transparent and developed mass media seen today.
“He opened the door for us to experience the existence of the free press,” said the governor.
Following the death of BJ Habibie at the army hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Subroto in Jakarta, Anies said that the nation has lost one of its best. “Indonesia mourns, we all are feeling a terrible loss.”
